No Matter What We Do!

Today Nature.com has in interesting article on the continuing fantasy about global warming. I refer to it now as a fantasy based on this article. It seems that no matter what we do we are still making the Earth a warmer place.

The article describes how reductions in industrial emissions and air scrubbing technology have steadily removed particulate matter from the atmosphere over the past few decades - but look out! It turns out that getting rid of all that pollution is causing more global warming!

[Reductions in particulate pollution] seem to have reduced the amount of dirt in the atmosphere and made the sky more transparent. That sounds like very good news. But the researchers say that more solar energy arriving on the ground will also make the surface warmer, and this may add to the problems of global warming. More sunlight will also have knock-on effects on cloud cover, winds, rainfall and air temperature that are difficult to predict.

"It is clear that the greenhouse effect has been partly masked in the past by air pollution," says Andreas Macke, a meteorologist at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel, Germany.

So rip that muffler of off your car, folks. It turns out that all those pesky attempts by the people of the world to stop air pollution is really going to make it worse for us. Bummer, huh?
