Attacks already shrill and inaccurate

MoveOn.org's description of John Roberts is a teeny bit (okay a whole mile or two) off the mark. Their phrase to describe him is 'right-wing lawyer and corporate lobbyist' and they encourage millions of subscribers to use this message when contacting elected officials.

According to the highly respected Center for Responsive Politics (the authority on campaign finance: if you've ever heard statistics about which industry or which metropolitan area supports a candidate for any federal office, it's from CRP), John G Roberts Jr. was hired as a lobbyist the Panhandle Peanut Growers Assn and Western Peanut Growers Assn in 1997. He was one of three staff members at his law firm that worked for the groups and the account totaled less than $20,000. These are hardly corporate giants (they represent the small farm producers) and certainly fails to make the case that Mr. Roberts is a 'corporate lobbyist'.

I realize they probably had the message tested before interest groups and ready to roll with a fill-in-the-name blank for whoever the President nominated. But is this really how the entire battle will be played out? The Democrats will surely lose out on more than just legislative seats if all they can offer is junk information and obstruction.
