Dan McCarney resigned today effective at the end of the regular season. Dan was currently the longest serving coach in the Big 12, and only 8 collegiate football coaches have coached for longer.
Dan gave a tearful goodbye and said that he has "no regrets" about his decision. However, the Iowa State athletic director, Jamie Pollard, gave a bizarre speech essentially apologizing for Dan's resignation which (I would assume) is telling of how this all went down.
I have mixed feelings about this. My friends and I would comment "can Dan" after numerous of Iowa State football's horrendous losses over the past few seasons. It's true that Dan has created what is now Cyclone Football, and has recreated the franchise. He claimed Iowa State's first bowl game win ever, and sent us to 5 bowls in 7 seasons. However, Dan was notorious for making awful game-time decisions on the field, some of which turned out amazingly well, others truly disastrous. Dan was an amazing recruiter, but it takes more than that for Iowa State to take its football program to the next level.
Coach Mac will be missed, but it's time for a fresh face. Bye, Dan...
